Thank you to the team for a fantastic season - I am passing over to Henry for the 2015 season but here are our results and our award winning trip video for Glan y Gors!
UCL A: 24th - A huge improvement! Also a great 24 hour result.
UCL B: 9th (Rookies)
UCL C: 22nd (Rookies)
A very early start to the morning that involved trying to push start our car the teams arrived to a very cold, damp and very windy Bayford only for it to promptly start raining. Both teams had a mixed practice session before gearing up for what was going to be a day of racing in very difficult conditions:
Ovie: 17th to 32nd: Sprint began well initially holding position in the first few laps before spinning off at a hairpin. Unfortunately being punted off again (and a few more subsequent spins pushing to get back up to good points) ruined his race.
Sintija: 8th to 34th A very similar situation to Ovie the wet conditions forced an early spin that left much to do after a promising practice session.
Emma: 3rd to 30th An exciting start to the race due to the high grid slot ended in disappointment after being punted off into the mud when running well half way down the field.
Akshay: 34th to 22nd A very steady and measured drive from Akshay got the B team its first result above the all-important 26th position, a great drive in the wet showed great potential for strong form in the rookie rounds later in the season.
Akshay and Ovie: 19th to 34th Again a solid drive from Akshay when in the kart, and a great improvement shown by Ovie on pace including a long battle with (unfortunately) Henry. Unfortunately this was followed by a few spins in a very short period of time that moved them down the order.
Emma and Sintija: 20th to 24th A sensible drive from both Emma and Sintija saw them only lose a few positions from their grid slot and score the teams only other >26th position under the floodlights.
All in all a very disappointing day for the B team result wise finishing 35/26th. However many signs of promise and no massive pit stop issues from years gone by, I’m sure UCL B is due for a very successful rookie year.
Merrick: 36th to 24th with little pressure at the start from people around him (starting at the back!) Merrick did very well to avoid the many accidents to occur in the first few laps. This and his increasing pace as he got into the race saw him make a few overtakes and score a great benchmark of above the crucial 26th for our lowest grid position.
Henry: 30th to 12th A fantastic start coupled with Henry’s pace and confidence from his practice session (no spins!) saw him make many overtakes and come through with an awesome result from the team from such a low grid, so close to being the race of the day!
David: 22nd to 21st After a poor practice session with a few spins at the hairpins I lost a lot of time in the race just trying to make sure I wasn’t a hypocrite to make sure and keep the kart of on track! A reasonable start but bled about 8 positions throughout the race.
Dickon: 15th to 3rd What can you say? Best ever result I can remember for a UCL driver should say enough. Incredible start left Dickon in 4th after 4 corners before overtaking to second and conceding a position to the eventual winner. Great composure to not make a mistake and convert the position when left in clean air.
Merrick and Henry: 7th to 28th A poor start that involved quite a few karts pulling high risk overtakes resulted in dropping far down the order. In Henry’s stint things went from bad to worse after he was split off from the group he was catching after not managing to make it past Ovie; the two spent about 12 laps fighting and almost colliding (incredibly painful to watch).
Dickon and David: 1st to 11th After managing to pull away from the pack Dickon was slowly reeled in by 1 driver (the winner) to be in a comfortable 2nd position. However a case of mistaken identity saw him pit without being called in by the team. After refuelling and without anyone to push start him Dickon was lucky to be told by Will to get back into the kart and then be push started by strangers! Needless to say after I finished kitting up I was surprised to see Dickon in 15th when we brought him in. I had a much better stint in the kart than my sprint, taking 6 places to hand over the kart in 13th which Dickon held on to. Two teams were subsequently banned for running a light driver underweight in the middle stint handing us 11th (with an extra pit stop!).
The A team finished 16/36, qualifying and scoring 45 championship points in the process. A fantastic result, especially as the conditions were so cold that ice was forming around my gloves.
Great company from everyone throughout the day, I can't wait for the rest of the season!
